Big brother set to watch CBD parking

Port Macquarie Hastings Council will commence installation of an innovative new parking system within the Port Macquarie CBD next Monday which is set to revolutionise parking management.

Electro-magnetic vehicle overstay detection systems, which operate via an in-ground unit embedded beneath parking spots, are being installed in time-restricted spaces along Horton and Hay Streets, Port Macquarie.

Each device is programmed with relevant data for the bay, including the time limit, operating hours, bay number, location and data and time. The technology accurately records how long a car has been parked and automatically notifies a Ranger via a hand-held device when a car has overstayed – although a grace period is built into the equipment.

Local family history surprise

Port Macquarie couple Phil & Vicki Langsford were surprised to discover some little known facts about their very own family history in the recently opened Women Transported exhibition at the Glasshouse.

“We were watching the news and saw a glimpse a women we thought must be Constance – we have an image of the same photograph in the exhibition,” said Vicki Langsford, a descendant of the Trudgett line. “My cousin in Orange (NSW) has been researching the family history and has lots of information about Constance and her family. I knew she was a convict but I had no idea that she had been factory woman.”

“My cousin’s mother was a Trudgett and one of her daughters now lives in Lake Cathie so there is another local connection to the exhibition. It is very exciting to see a relative of mine featured in the exhibition.”

Fluoridation project for Port Macquarie underway

Construction work on the $1.77 million water supply fluoridation plant at the Rosewood Reservoir site west of Wauchope will begin the week commencing Monday 3 May 2010.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has appointed local contractor Garry Bannister Constructions Pty Ltd to carry out the civil and building works for this project.

A second contract for the Fluoridation Switchgear and Controlgear Assembly (FSCA) has been awarded to local company Mid Coast Telemetry and this contract will run concurrently with the civil works.

The final installation of the fluoridation plant and dosing equipment will be completed by Council.

The fluoridation of the water supply will then commence following inspection and commissioning approvals by NSW Health.

Based upon current scheduled works and subject to final approvals from NSW Health it is anticipated that the fluoridation of the Hastings Water Supply System will commence in April 2011.

Council is constructing the Rosewood Road Fluoridation Plant, near the Wauchope Water Treatment Plant, following a direction by the NSW Health to fluoridate the region’s reticulated water supply.

Council has been granted $1.77 million in funding from NSW Health for the construction of the fluoridation facility.

To ensure the standard of the facility is in line with similar Council facilities in terms of operational health and safety and plant operation maintenance and reliability, Council has approved additional funding for duty/stand-by dosing pump arrangements and additional site and laboratory facilities.

Koala survey in the Camden Haven

Camden Haven Protection Society held its Backyard Biodiversity Day at Dunbogan Hall last Sunday, 28th February to a packed public audience. Ecological Consultant to the Society, Jason Berrigan said the day was very successful with the public filling the hall and showing a lot of interest in the project. The community day comprised displays of wildlife, in particular live snakes, and presentations from key groups, such as North Coast Herpetology Group, Koala Preservation Society, FAWNA, CH Birdwatchers, Port Macquarie Hastings Council, National Parks and Wildlife Service, and the Bunyah Local Aboriginal Land Council. Mr Berrigan said it was important that the public got involved in the survey of fauna in the Camden Head area, and encouraged the local community to obtain survey forms, either directly by calling him on 6559 0075 or by downloading from the Society website www.chprotection.org.au

The Camden Head area is a very unique place with such a diverse range of habitats. In a small area of approximately 100ha there is: mangrove swamps, beach, sand dunes, grassy headlands, littoral rainforest, open woodland, coastal heath, rocky foreshores, intertidal and estuarine environments and offshore reefs. It is important for everyone to take steps to protect this area’s irreplaceable natural wealth and to reduce biodiversity loss, Mr Berrigan said.
