
Local Nurse and Nationals spokesperson for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams rallied alongside her colleagues and community members today to call for a stop to further job cuts at the Port Macquarie Base Hospital.
Protesters at today’s rally are calling on the State Labor Government to abandon any thought of further job cuts to front line positions.

An interstate two-day seminar focusing on the evolving role of Nurse Practitioners – the most advanced, autonomous clinical nurses in the workforce – will be hosted by North Coast Area Health Service (NCAHS) on Thursday 18 and Friday19 February 2010.
The workshop will be held at the University of NSW Rural Clinical School in Port Macquarie and features several high-profile speakers. Nurse Practitioners from a variety of Australian health care settings have confirmed their attendance.
Nurse Practitioners are authorised to deliver care within a specialized scope of practice. Many Nurse Practitioners have attained Masters level university degrees. As a result of their education and experience, they are able to demonstrate a high level of clinical proficiency in carrying out a range of evidence-based procedures, treatments and interventions.

A local program that aims to reduce illness in North Coast children, has won the ‘Enterprise and Innovation’ Award at the NSW Aboriginal Health Baxter Awards held last Monday night.
The Mister Germ Hygiene and Nutrition Program, based on a similar program run in Northern Queensland, was adapted for local delivery in pre-schools by Robert Barnett, Environmental Health Officer and Dianne Penberthy, Health Promotion Officer of North Coast Area Health Service (NCAHS).
Mr Barnett said “Mister Germ is a program aimed at promoting hand washing and good nutrition for pre-school children. It trains pre-school teachers to run activities and games encouraging good hand hygiene and positive nutrition practices.”
‘The characters “Mister Germ” and “The Germinator” teach the children a basic understanding of germs, how they are spread and how to avoid them, basic nutrition and the value of exercise’ he added.
