MNC is now the preferred holiday destination


Destinations throughout the Mid North Coast have overtaken Sydney as the preferred NSW holiday destination for Australians 14 + in survey results released today by Roy Morgan Research.

The Mid North Coast destinations from Port Stephens in the south to Coffs Coast in the north are the number 1 preferred holiday destinations in the survey ahead of Sydney at number 2, the Blue Mountains at 3, Hunter at 4 and Northern Rivers at 5 in a line up of more than 15 regions throughout the state, Mid North Coast Regional Tourism Executive Officer, Ms Belinda Novicky announced today.

Mid North Coast Signature Dish Awards 2009

Glenn Thompson from Zest Restaurant in Port Stephens has won the Mid North Coast Tourism 2009 Signature Dish Competition for the second consecutive year with his “Balantine of Farmed Macleay Rabbit wrapped in Prosciutto with Pickled Eschallots, Black Olive Paint and Sauce Aigre Doux matched with a Cassegrain Edition Noir 2008 Pinot Noir.”

He displayed his winning style to special guest judge, Serge Dansereau from the Bathers’ Pavilion at Sydney’s Balmoral Beach, and fellow judges John Cassegrain from Cassegrain Wines and North Coast Institute of TAFE Port Macquarie based senior cooking teachers, Matthew Armstrong and David Baker.

“The winning dish was as good as any of the best restaurants in Sydney,” said Dansereau.

“Glenn’s skills, his use of fresh local product, the presentation and taste were all top quality.”

Dansereau also noted the camaraderie and professional support among mid north coast producers, chefs and the tourism industry.

Mid North Coast Tourism Awards Finalists

Finalists for the glittering “Oscars” themed 2009 Countrylink Mid North Coast Tourism Awards were announced yesterday.

Winners will be announced at the presentation night to be held at Port Macquarie’s new Glasshouse Arts, Conference and Entertainment Centre on August 20.

Serge Dansereau to judge Signature Dish Awards

Internationally renowned chef and author, Serge Dansereau, is set to visit the Mid North Coast NSW in September to judge the MNCRTO 2nd Annual Signature Dish Competition.

Dansereau, owner of The Bather’s Pavilion restaurant, café and function centre overlooking Sydney’s Balmoral Beach will join leading local wine maker, John Cassegrain and North Coast Institute of TAFE, Port Macquarie Campus Head Cooking Teacher, Matthew Armstrong to judge this popular competition on September 9.

Cookery students, local chefs and foodies can also enjoy Dansereau’s extensive experience at a presentation to be held at the Port Macquarie TAFE campus on September 8 when he will discuss his culinary career, philosophies and travels.

MID-NORTH COAST A BIG WINNER!

Eateries throughout the Mid North Coast NSW have carried away almost half of the 27 major 2009 Restaurant and Catering Northern Awards for Excellence with Bellingen’s No 2 Oak Street, taking home the Northern Region Restaurant of the Year Award.

Finalists featured cafes and restaurants from Port Macquarie in the south to Murwillumbah in the north and north west through to Armidale.

“The Mid North Coast NSW is increasingly attracting attention to its thriving dining scene,” said Mid North Coast NSW Regional Tourism Organisation Executive Officer, Ms Belinda Novicky.

“Our region is a surprising food bowl attracting talented chefs serving up a strong variety of contemporary cuisine made from a bounty of fresh local produce,” she said.

“Eating out is one of the most popular activities for the majority of visitors to our region.

“And, our region is offering up some of the best cuisine on the coast.”
