Buy your own seat at the Glasshouse

Seats are now on sale in the Glasshouse Theatre—and not just for a single performance. The Play A Part Seat Endowment Program gives the community an opportunity to be directly involved in the historic opening of the Glasshouse Arts, Conference and Entertainment Centre, by endowing a seat in the name of a person, group or loved one.

The endowment (of either $1,500 or $3,000) will see the name of the person or group etched into a plaque that will be attached to the front of one of the seats in the theatre and will remain in situ for the life of the seat (approx 20 years). People also have the opportunity to choose which seat they would like to endow.

“Endowing a seat will help ensure future programming in the Glasshouse,” says Lesley Atkinson, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Director Community & Cultural Development. “These donations are a way for groups or individuals to make a contribution to the community. The money will support education programs and community activities that now have a worthy home in the Glasshouse.”

Circus Oz on the way to Port Macquarie

The exuberant, comedic, barely-contained mayhem of the new Circus Oz performance will arrive in Port Macquarie this week.

With the originally-scheduled four performances now almost sold out, the Glasshouse has scheduled an additional Circus Oz show for Sunday August 16 at 1:30pm.

Circus Oz will be performing their spectacular show from Thursday August 13 to Sunday August 16. These exciting and daring multi-skilled performers will offer up a selection of irreverent characters and stunt-jumping acrobatics that will have audience members—both young and old—on the edge of their seats.

With the number of performers, acrobatics, rollerblading and aerial work, Circus Oz will test the full technical capabilities of the backstage and utilise the theatre’s fly tower,” says Robyn Birrell, Director Performing Arts. “Be alert, because with Circus Oz, anything can happen.”

Ceramic Artist Avital Sheffer at the Glasshouse

Avital Sheffer is a ceramic artist based on the north coast of NSW. She creates large ceramic vessel forms. An exhibition of 26 of Sheffer’s artworks will be displayed in the Glasshouse Regional Gallery from today until the 27th of September.

From her native country of Israel Avital Sheffer brings a deep engagement with multi-faceted Middle Eastern cultures, history and design—complexities and dilemmas she explores in her work.

In the way that they reference the archaeology of her heritage, Sheffer’s works give the viewer a feeling of looking at something ancient. The artworks have a serene beauty.” says Niomi Sands, Gallery Curator.

Sheffer has developed a unique aesthetic language—at once intimate and universal. While referencing ancient civilizations, the idiosyncratic forms and intricate surfaces of the vessels ground her work firmly in the contemporary.

Local heritage comes to life at the Glasshouse

Interpretative signage detailing the history of the various buildings that previously occupied the site of the Glasshouse Arts, Conference and Entertainment Centre is now in place.

“The archaeological remains located in the basement now come to life with the installation of artefacts uncovered during the excavation, associated people stories and a touch screen that highlights facts about the archaeological dig and the archaeologists who worked on the site,” says Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s Regional Museums Curator Liz Gillroy. “The in situ remains show the foundation lines of a Convict Overseer’s Cottage from 1823 and of the first Council Chambers built in 1892.”

Additional display cases located in the ground floor foyer also help to tell the history of the Glasshouse site. “Images and words are beautifully presented in the displays and touch screens, inviting visitors to interactively explore stories about specific elements associated with the site’s history,” says Gillroy.
