Local family history surprise

Port Macquarie couple Phil & Vicki Langsford were surprised to discover some little known facts about their very own family history in the recently opened Women Transported exhibition at the Glasshouse.

“We were watching the news and saw a glimpse a women we thought must be Constance – we have an image of the same photograph in the exhibition,” said Vicki Langsford, a descendant of the Trudgett line. “My cousin in Orange (NSW) has been researching the family history and has lots of information about Constance and her family. I knew she was a convict but I had no idea that she had been factory woman.”

“My cousin’s mother was a Trudgett and one of her daughters now lives in Lake Cathie so there is another local connection to the exhibition. It is very exciting to see a relative of mine featured in the exhibition.”

Tony Bond from the Art Gallery of NSW has been in Port Macquarie all week supervising the installation of the artwork. The exhibition opening is tomorrow (Thursday) evening at 6pm, and the installation work is now nearing completion.

Tony Bond is available today (Wednesday) for interview and photo opportunities with the installation.

1888 Melbourne Cup on show at the Glasshouse

Just in time for Port Macquarie’s own racing carnival, a celebration of the Melbourne Cup is taking place at the Glasshouse Gallery.

The Melbourne Cup trophy of 1888 was known as the Centennial Cup and was commissioned from England. This valuable award is on loan from the National Gallery of Australia and features three magnificent horses cast in solid silver, each weighing 800 grams, mounted on a large silver-plated base. The trophy was particularly large due to the importance of the centenary and because the Melbourne Cup was at the time the most valuable handicap in the world.

1888 was the one hundredth anniversary of British settlement in Australia and, although the various colonies were not yet welded into one federated nation, all the colonies joined in a year of celebrations to mark the first century of the new land.

In Melbourne the climax of the celebrations was the Centennial Fair and the Melbourne Cup.

Buy your own seat at the Glasshouse

Seats are now on sale in the Glasshouse Theatre—and not just for a single performance. The Play A Part Seat Endowment Program gives the community an opportunity to be directly involved in the historic opening of the Glasshouse Arts, Conference and Entertainment Centre, by endowing a seat in the name of a person, group or loved one.

The endowment (of either $1,500 or $3,000) will see the name of the person or group etched into a plaque that will be attached to the front of one of the seats in the theatre and will remain in situ for the life of the seat (approx 20 years). People also have the opportunity to choose which seat they would like to endow.

“Endowing a seat will help ensure future programming in the Glasshouse,” says Lesley Atkinson, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Director Community & Cultural Development. “These donations are a way for groups or individuals to make a contribution to the community. The money will support education programs and community activities that now have a worthy home in the Glasshouse.”
