Local artists are invited to enter the inaugural ‘Tastings of the Hastings Art Competition’, sponsored by Long Point Vineyard and Art Gallery at Lake Cathie. The event will run in conjunction with the successful annual Food and Wine Festival supported by local farmers, producers, restaurants and wineries.
The competition hopes to attract many local artists and a variety of styles, all showcasing the competition theme – ‘Homegrown’.
Event organiser and owner of Long Point Vineyard, Graeme Davies, explains the homegrown theme as: “Any representation of the produce, people and places in our local area where food or wine is grown, made, sold or enjoyed.”
With a $3,000 first prize for the Open Section and $500 from Country Energy for the Youth Section, the competition is open to any painting media. Dr Leigh Summers, director of the Coffs Harbour regional gallery, will be judging the event.

Avital Sheffer is a ceramic artist based on the north coast of NSW. She creates large ceramic vessel forms. An exhibition of 26 of Sheffer’s artworks will be displayed in the Glasshouse Regional Gallery from today until the 27th of September.
From her native country of Israel Avital Sheffer brings a deep engagement with multi-faceted Middle Eastern cultures, history and design—complexities and dilemmas she explores in her work.
“In the way that they reference the archaeology of her heritage, Sheffer’s works give the viewer a feeling of looking at something ancient. The artworks have a serene beauty.” says Niomi Sands, Gallery Curator.
Sheffer has developed a unique aesthetic language—at once intimate and universal. While referencing ancient civilizations, the idiosyncratic forms and intricate surfaces of the vessels ground her work firmly in the contemporary.

The Local Narratives exhibition was developed over a two-year period and incorporated three workshop sessions that were arranged by the Glasshouse Regional Gallery.
