Planning for Port Macquarie-Hastings future

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council will start surveying local residents today week about life in the Hastings.

The surveys will look at a range of community issues including employment, health, education and housing as well as social activities. A second survey will also be conducted to identify perceptions of crime in the community.

Director of Community and Cultural Development, Lesley Atkinson said, “The information gathered in the surveys will assist staff in the development and creation of strategies for implementation into the future.

“The surveys will also assist Council to strengthen the community’s vision following on from the 2030 Forums held recently.

“Council is hoping to engage with individuals, families and groups to obtain an understanding of perceptions of the local community.

“In gaining a greater insight into perceptions of local and broader community life, Council will attempt to work with communities to enhance and strengthen connection to where they live,” Ms Atkinson said.

“Information received in the crime survey will help Council compare community perceptions of crime with actual crime statistics and will be used to develop a number of local strategies in relation to improving people’s sense of safety,” Ms Atkinson said.

Council staff will be hosting information booths in locations throughout the area over the next few months.

To ensure all residents have an opportunity to participate in the information collection process, Council will also be holding small-targeted forums in towns and villages in rural areas in September and October.
